Oaks Corners Fire Department Starts Duty Crew Program
|
In December of 2010, the Oaks Corners Fire Department started a new program with the goal of improving
response times to emergency calls. The Duty Crew program consists of a group of trained personnel who will
be staffing the station in an effort to get the first responding piece of apparatus out the door quickly to fire &
EMS calls.
In November, Chief Brian Maney began investigating several programs including one which proved very
successful for the Clyde Fire Department. Input was received from many fire department members and a
program was developed. The program was rolled out in December with a month of testing to see how the
program would work. 22 members have agreed to participate in the program and the members accumulated
328 staffing hours in December.
Members sign up to staff the station in four-hour blocks, and are encouraged to work at least 8 hours per
month. The members can sign up for whichever shifts suit their personal & work schedules. While on duty,
the crew is responsible for responding to all emergency calls received during their shift. They are also given
a small list of station duties such as station cleaning, building & apparatus maintenance, and apparatus
checks. The duty crew can also receive training credit during their shift. The program is run by a Duty crew
chairman as well as the Fire Chief.
This program does not give us 24-hour coverage or coverage every day. There have however been a few
calls where the truck has not had to wait for a crew and can leave immediately after dispatch. When this
happens, our response times are greatly reduced. The duty crew members currently consist of...
Drivers: 13
Interior Firefighters: 13
Support Firefighters: 7
EMS Providers: 5
Dispatchers: 1
We hope to maintain & even increase participation in the program in 2011. The original plan was to
incorporate incentives & rewards for the participating members, but finances have been limited due to budget
constraints. We would like to thank the duty crew members for their participation and dedication to the Oaks
Corners Fire Department and to the communities we serve.
