On November 19, 2011 at 10:00pm, the Oaks Corners Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a barn on fire on Bohner Road just off County Road 6. The Lyons Fire Department was also dispatched per the automatic mutual aid plan. The Ontario County 911 Center had received several additional calls including reports of flames showing from the roof from a large barn at 735 Bohner Road. Chief Maney, Asst. Chief DeRuyter, and Deputy Chief Reifsteck all called enroute within a couple of minutes. Chief Maney requested the Phelps & Marbletown Fire Departments be placed on stand-by for a possible move to the scene.
Oaks Corners EMS Lt. Chris Tiffany was the first unit to arrive on scene and reported a working barn fire. Chief Maney requested a tanker & engine from both Phelps & Marbletown and a tanker from the Junius Fire Department. Upon arriving on scene Chief Maney received a size-up from EMS Captain Tiffany & Asst. Chief DeRuyter that there was a tractor on fire in the barn with extension to the building and that the cows were still in the barn. Chief Maney set up command on Side-4 and requested that Lyons Engine-7 lay a supply line down the 1,000 foot driveway and report to Asst. Chief DeRuyter on Side-3. Chief Maney requested an additional tanker from the North Side Fire Department and an engine from Geneva to stand by in the Oaks Corners station. Phelps Engine 2131 was sent to Halco on County Road 6 to set up a tanker fill site. Deputy Chief Reifsteck arrived on scene and was assigned Operations.
Lyons Engine-7 layed in and positioned on Side-3. Firefighters stretched an attack line into the building to attack the fire and protect the livestock. Oaks Corners Pumper/Tanker 3231 finished the long lay and hooked into Lyons Engine 7. Oaks Corners Engine 3211 set up a portable pond operation at the road and prepared to supply the attack engine. Heavy Rescue 3272 positioned on Side-4 and deployed scene lighting in and around the building. The fire was extinguished with 2,500 gallons of water from the first two engines and none of the tanker water was used. The fire was declared under control at 10:27pm. The North Side tanker was sent to the Oaks Corners station for stand-by and the Marbletown engine was sent to stand-by in Phelps. Firefighters remained on scene for another hour conducting overhaul.
Additional assistance was provided on scene by the Town of Phelps Code Enforcement Office, Ontario County Sheriff's Office, and the Ontario County Office of Emergency Management. The fire investigation concluded that the fire was a result of an electrical problem with the tractor. The tractor was completely destroyed with heavy damage to the front half of the cow barn.
The following pictures were taken from inside the barn after extinguishment and removal of the tractor.
