Multiple Departments Battle Brush Fire at Sheppard Grain
On July 22, 2010 at 1:10pm, the Ontario County 911 Center received a radio report from Seneca Castle Fire
Chief Jim Trickey that there was a brush fire at Sheppard Grain which is located at 1615 Maryland Road in the
Town of Phelps. Chief Trickey asked for the Oaks Corners Fire Dept. to be dispatched and recommended a
tanker from the Phelps FD. Oaks Corners Chief Brian Maney responded and reported a large column of smoke
in that direction and knowing that he had several members responding to the station, asked for a brush truck
and Gator out of Phelps. Oaks Corners Brush Truck 3251, Pumper/Tanker 3231, and Rescue 3271 responded
within minutes.

Chief Maney arrived at the scene and reported a large brush fire about 800 feet behind the complex. Due to
the dry conditions and high temperature he requested a brush truck and Ranger from the Marbletown FD and
Lyons Ambulance for stand-by. Phelps Ambulance was tied up on multiple calls. Chief Maney directed 3251 to
the north flank of the fire to protect several pieces of farm equipment and had Pumper/Tanker 3231 set up to
fill brush trucks. Rescue 3271 set up a rehab sector under the direction of EMT Rouse. Phelps Brush Truck
2151 was directed to the south flank of the fire. The Gator was set up and operated by Deputy Fire Coordinator
Scott DeCook. Marbletown deployed their brush truck just as 3251 ran out of water. All three brush trucks and
the gator extinguished the fire with 1900 gallons of water. Units remained on scene for two hours extinguishing
hot spots as the fire was burning under heavy brush and several layers of soybean ash from the soybean
operation that had been dumped in the field over time. The fire was caused by soybean ash dumped the
previous day.

Heavy Rescue 3272, Phelps Tanker 2141, & Rescue 2171 responded to the scene to stand by, but were not
used. The North Side FD provided stand-by coverage for Oaks Corners Fire.
