Agricultural Building Damaged in Oaks Corners Fire
On 07/09/10 at 10:35pm, the Oaks Corners & Phelps Fire Departments (automatic mutual aid) were dispatched
to Shepard Grain at 1615 Maryland Rd. for a report of a roasting shed on fire. Asst. Chief Lee DeRuyter was
the first unit to arrive on scene and reported that there was fire visible burning in the rafters on arrival. Chief
Maney arrived on scene a minute later and had the Phelps units stand by in their station.

Chief Maney assumed command while Asst. Chief DeRuyter disconnected the electricity from the building and
turned off the propane. Deputy Chief Reifsteck arrived and was placed in command of suppression operations.
Engine 3211 pulled past the building and interior crews stretched an attack line into the building.
Pumper/Tanker 3231 pulled ahead of 3211 and stretched a 4" supply line to Engine 3211. The crew from
Rescue 3272 stretched a backup line with foam from Engine 3211 into the building and sent additional interior
firefighters to staging. Rescue 3271 set up a firefighter rehab sector under the direction of EMT Rouse.

Firefighters spent a lot of time on overhaul which consisted of tearing down a lot of sheet metal siding and
extinguishing hot spots. There was some minor extension to the nearby utility building which was quickly
extinguished. 1200 gallons of water was used for suppression & overhaul.

The fire was caused by heat from the roasting unit which ignited dust from the roasting operation. The fire
extended to the rafters in the building and spread from there.

20 Oaks Corners Firefighters responded to the scene. Phelps Ambulance & Town of Phelps Code Enforcement
assisted on scene.
