Firefighters Respond to Minor Fire at Phelps Sungas.
On 06/11/09 at 12:12am, the Oaks Corners Fire Department was dispatched to Phelps Sungas at 224 Cross
road for a reported fire on a rack inside a fenced in area. Per the automatic mutual aid agreement, the Geneva
Fire Department was also dispatched for an engine, and the North Side Fire Department was dispatched for a
tanker. Oaks Corners Chief Mike Reifsteck was the first unit to arrive on scene and reported a small fire
burning on a metal rack up against a building. Chief Reifsteck asked for the Geneva Fire Department to
disregard, and the North Side FD to continue with the tanker. The chief also requested a representative from
the business respond as they were unable to gain access to the fire due to new gates being installed.

Oaks Corners Engine 3211, Pumper-Tanker 3231, and Rescue 3271 responded with a crew of 14 fire & EMS
responders. A crew from Engine 3211 was sent inside the fence to extinguish the fire with a water extinguisher,
and check the building for fire extension with the thermal imaging camera.

The fire was contained to a metal rack containing stacks of paint filters that had been removed from the paint
booth the previous day. Security camera footage showed the filters had self-combusted and had been burning
for over an hour before being spotted by a passing motorist.
