Fire Causes Heavy Damage to Phelps Highway Garage
On Monday April 25 at around 9:15pm, the Phelps Fire Department was dispatched to the Town of Phelps
Highway garage at 63 Mill St. for an automatic fire alarm activation. Within two minutes The Ontario County 911
Center received a 911 call reporting smoke showing from all of the overhead doors. Phelps Engine 2131
arrived on scene and confirmed that there was smoke showing. Phelps Command then requested mutual aid
from the Oaks Corners Fire Dept, and the Clifton Springs Fire Dept. to stand by in their station. Within minutes,
Phelps Command requested a FAST Team and ladder truck from Clifton Springs to the scene. Phelps Engine
2121 hit the hydrant on an access road across the street from the incident and laid a supply line to Engine
2131.

Phelps firefighters made an aggressive interior attack and were able to quickly knock down the fire. Several
highway department vehicles were damaged and there was extensive damage to the interior of the building.
Oaks Corners Firefighters responded with Engine 3211, Pumper/Tanker 3231, Heavy Rescue 3272, and
Rescue 3271 with a crew of 19 under Chief Maney. Oaks Corners firefighters stretched a second backup line
from Engine 3211 and assisted Phelps firefighters with overhaul. Oaks Corners EMS staff set up a rehab sector
for interior firefighters.

The Marbletown, Geneva, & Manchester fire Departments provided stand-by coverage for departments that
were tied up on scene.
