Garbage Truck Rollover Closes Route 96
On April 04, 2011 at 3:49pm, the Oaks Corners Fire Dept. and Phelps Ambulance were dispatched to Route 96
east of Route 14 for a reported garbage truck rolled over. A State Police unit was on scene requesting
assistance with traffic. Oaks Corners Chief Maney & Asst. Chief Arnold were the first units on scene and Chief
Maney assumed command on the west side of the incident. Command then reported a garbage truck rolled
over blocking Route 96. A Phelps Ambulance medic on scene reported that the driver had sustained very minor
injuries.

The Oaks Corners Fire Dept. responded with Engine 3211, Heavy Rescue 327
2, Rescue 3271 and a crew of
21. A crew of 3 remained on stand-by in station with additional apparatus. Chief Maney reported that the truck
was leaking gasoline and had Engine 3211 stretch a foam line to lay down a blanket of foam to suppress the
gasoline vapors. Captain Lane had a crew attempt to stop the fuel leak but the leak was not accessible. Asst.
Chief Arnold had a crew disconnect the battery once the foam was deployed. Chief Maney had a crew deploy
an absorbent boom in the nearby drainage ditch to keep fuel from flowing to a nearby storm drain. It was
estimated that only two to three gallons of fuel leaked from the vehicle. The fuel leak stopped once the tow
service uprighted the truck.

Rescue 3271 shut down westbound traffic at the corner of Pre-emption St. Once the tow service arrived on
scene, Oaks Corners Fire Police units had to shut down all eastbound traffic at the Route 96/Route 14 clover
leaf which required additional traffic control posts at three locations. Traffic was shut down for an hour while the
scene was cleaned up.
